about winry;

Character Name; Winry Rockbell
Series/Fandom; Fullmetal Alchemist
Timeline; One year after Conqueror of Shamballa.

Personality;
Winry Rockbell is certainly a rarity among female characters in the world of anime and manga. Winry is a beautiful, young girl with a healer’s hand and a fiery temper. An automail and mechanical genius, Winry is a girl who finds screws and bolts far more interesting than jewels and glamour, but this doesn’t mean she’s a butch girl with no femininity to her. Winry’s a genuinely caring person, especially towards her two childhood friends, Edward and Alphonse Elric. Having fitted Edward’s automail limbs and maintained them ever since, Winry is very dedicated and loyal to the brothers and is constantly concerned for their well-being, also wondering what they are off doing in the military and asking them to please take care of themselves and look out for each other. Winry occasionally accompanies them on their travels, but generally she stays at home in Risembool with her grandmother Pinako and runs an automail business alongside her, but she’s always ready to help the brothers when they somehow make their way home.

Having said that, Winry’s not just the token Girl Back Home. She isn’t the kind of girl who sits by the window, staring longing down the street hoping for a sign of her Knight in Shining Automail to return home to her. Winry’s strong and independent and has a business to run and things to do, people to see, and automail to build, and with or without the brothers by her side she keeps moving forward. She thinks about them, certainly, and worries and wonders, but she doesn’t go through life just waiting for them to come back. She’s her own person, with her own life, dreams, and goals she pursues, and she chases them and doesn’t let anything hold her back, not even her best friends. And more than anything else, she wants them to be happy. She wants them to succeed in their quest and she supports them, and tries her hardest to understand their situation and feelings, even though they sometimes make it difficult for her. But she tries her damned hardest, always.

But while Winry’s a very caring person, she’s not beyond whacking a few people around if they are Doing It Wrong (her weapon of choice being a wrench that she carries around on her person. Where, exactly, she keeps it is still a mystery.) She’s a no nonsense kind of girl and if you piss her off, you better be to either have your ear yelled off or your head bashed in. Winry’s particularly sensitive about her automail and gets angry at Edward if his automail is ever destroyed or shown up by someone else’s work. She wants hers to be the best and he makes that less than easy for her what with getting it blown up all the time. But Winry’s not without fault, either, and like any human she can make mistakes. She can be forgetful, even about her automail, and one memorable incident in both the anime and manga had Winry forget to put a particularly important screw in Ed’s automail ‘causing it to malfunction at a crucial moment. But Winry’s sensitive and proud and wasn’t willing to admit that Edward’s injuries were partially her fault, instead laying the full blame on Ed for being careless and rash. And Winry can get overly emotional about things, but who can blame her with the kind of stuff she’s forced to live through, being the one always left behind? And she’s a teenage girl with a lot of growing up to do, but she’s getting there, slowly but surely.

Strengths/Abilities;
Like Edward Elric’s passion and strength is in his alchemic prowess and knowledge, Winry’s is in mechanics and machines. From simple things like hot-wiring or fixing a broken down vehicle to building automail limbs from scratch, Winry’s greatest ability is her in-depth knowledge of working machines and the human body, such as the nerve system, etc. and how to connect the two. Winry’s grandmother runs an automail business that Winry has been working in for most of her life and she’s learned a great deal from other automail mechanics and is always eager to take things apart and see how they work. So another great strength of hers is her curiosity and her readiness to learn how to advance and perfect her ‘art.’

Weaknesses;
Winry’s greatest weakness and certainly one of her most glaring flaws is her sensitivity and how emotionally worked up she can get over things, particularly anything involving the brothers or her parents or her automail. She always has a hard time admitting when she’s wrong or she’s made a mistake. And she’s frightened and confused about so many things and she’s a vulnerable, young girl and it clearly shows when she’s in a tight spot or in danger.

Background;
A childhood friend of Edward and Alphonse Elric, Winry Rockbell grew up in the small, country town of Risembool, Amestris, and was raised mostly by her grandmother Pinako. Her parents were both doctors serving the military in the war against Ishbal and were killed when Winry was quite young (she later learns that the man who killed her parents was none other than Colonel Roy Mustang, Edward’s commanding officer.) Fascinated by automail and mechanics since her grandmother was an automail expert, Winry learned the tools of the trade from Pinako and became a skilled automail expert herself. When Edward lost his arm and leg to the Gate of the Truth trying to revive his mother from the dead and save his brother Al from being taken by the Gate, it was Winry and Pinako who crafted his automail limbs. Over the years, Winry took full control of maintenance and repair of Ed’s automail, considering him her finest work.

Due to her close relationship with the brothers and some unfortunate bad timing over the years, Winry has ended up in some tight spots. Shortly after Edward became a State Alchemist, Winry left Risembool to visit them in Central and upon her arrival, was kidnapped and almost butchered by Barry the Chopper. Despite this horrifying first experience in Central, Winry comes to visit the brothers periodically over the next several years, and even forms close relationships with some of Ed’s military friends, in particular Riza Hawkeye (who becomes an almost big sister to Winry,) Sheska, and the Hughes family. Winry often comes to Central and even travels to other locations around the country when needed for automail repairs. Winry eventually learns from a group of Ishbalian children that Roy Mustang was the one to murder her parents, though a confrontation between the two in which this subject is addressed is not shown.

In the manga, Winry is often targeted by the higher ups of the military (Führer King Bradley, or Pride/Wrath, threatens her safety in order to make the Elrics behave) and the homunculi as a means to get to the Elrics, but this aspect is severely played down in the anime and the only homunculi she ever faces head on are Sloth (whom she recognizes as being Ed and Al’s mother Trisha) and Wrath. However, Envy also takes on her form at one point to try and trick Ed and Al, which most likely means she’s at least being closely watched by the Homunculi without her knowledge.

After Alphonse regains his body and Edward is sucked to the other side of the Gate, Winry looks after Alphonse and, although she isn’t aware of whether or not Ed is still alive or not, rebuilds his automail based on rough estimates to how much he must have grown. When Al leaves to go find Edward, Winry goes after him to help him and lugs Ed’s automail around with her. When Edward finally returns, Winry only has one brief encounter with him, during which she re installs his new automail. Immediately after, Ed goes to join Al and the two team up to stop the invasion of their world. Winry witnesses Ed’s departure back to the other world without saying goodbye. While sad that the two are gone for good, Winry returns to working in the automail shop with Pinako and carries on with her life.
